God’s everlasting covenant with Israel
A remnant in Israel
Israel will be numerous but only a remnant will be saved. We see in our day and age that Churches are being established in Israel and many are coming to know Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
The remnant will be saved
Isaiah 10:20-2220 In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 21 A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God. 22 Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous.
Israel - from sin to restoration
Israel sinned and as a consequence went into exile but God’s promise remained in place. We have seen His promise of restoration that was spoken of by the Old Testament prophets fulfilled in 1948. Israel was restored and God did this for His names sake.
A verse that captures the essence of Israel’s sin and God’s eternal promise is
Ezekiel 36:22-23Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.’
This passage emphasises that despite Israel’s sins, God remains faithful to His promises. He does this for the sake of His Holy name.
In this verse we see Israel brought back to their ancestral land and born as a nation again.
Ezekiel 36:24For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.
Jesus is from the line of David and will be king over Israel forever. In the verse below, the servant David is referring to the coming Messianic ruler who is Christ Himself.
Ezekiel 37:24-25My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees. They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever.
This should also be a reminder to the world that God’s promise to Israel is eternal. More so now than ever, we should be standing by God’s first chosen people and be praying for them.
Genesis 12:3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
Israel will see the truth
Romans 11:25-27For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written…
Not only did God plan the return of Israel to be born as a nation in a single day, it is much deeper than that. The Word speaks of a spiritual revival in which Israel will see the Lord for who He is.
Ezekiel 36:25-28I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
These are real believers who are turning to Yeshua Hamashiach (Jesus Christ) as their Lord and Saviour. That is to believe in the Son. Jesus said that no one can know the Father except through the Son.
John 14:6-7I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him…
